St James' University Hospital SDEC, Leeds
Delivering a live-hospital joinery package ahead of programme at St James' University Hospital
Project overview
The SDEC scheme created a dedicated Same Day Emergency Care unit within the Chancellor's Wing at St James' University Hospital. The wider I&G project was a £3.9m, 43-week refurbishment for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, carried out within an operational hospital environment adjacent to the emergency department.
The completed unit provides new clinical assessment and treatment spaces, examination rooms and bays, clinical offices, staff bases, waiting areas and reception facilities designed to support rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment without unnecessary hospital admission.

Scope of works
CJ Joinery delivered an install-only package including:
- Installation of 55 doorsets supplied by Specialist Door Solutions (SDS)
- Installation of associated ironmongery
- Installation of approximately 45 IPS sanitaryware units
- Coordination of joinery installation around other trades
- Planned works in both hoarded construction areas and live hospital areas
- Careful movement and handling of materials on a constrained live site
The challenge
The main challenge was the restricted nature of the site. St James' remained fully operational throughout the works, the project had limited working and storage space, and the site compound included a storage container rather than large dedicated laydown areas.
Some of CJ's work also sat outside the main hoarded construction zone and within live hospital areas. These activities could not simply be carried out whenever convenient; they had to be programmed with I&G around hospital operations so that clinical areas, staff and patients were not disrupted.
Our approach
CJ Joinery worked closely with I&G and the other site trades to coordinate access, sequencing and installation activities. The team kept material movements controlled, used the available storage efficiently and programmed works in live hospital areas in advance.
Particular attention was given to:
- Programming works outside the hoarded site around hospital operations
- Working efficiently within limited storage and site-space constraints
- Coordinating doorset and IPS installation with other trades
- Maintaining clear communication with I&G on access and work sequencing
- Keeping work areas controlled and suitable for a live healthcare environment
- Maintaining productivity despite the restricted site logistics
Outcome
CJ Joinery successfully delivered the doorset and IPS installation package while working within the constraints of a busy live hospital. The team coordinated well with I&G and the other trades, adapted to the limited storage and access arrangements, and completed its works ahead of programme.
The project demonstrates CJ Joinery Contracts' ability to deliver commercial joinery packages in sensitive healthcare environments where logistics, coordination and programme control are as important as installation quality.
