Education

Project overview

Laurus Ryecroft High School was delivered as a new-build secondary school and sixth form for Laurus Trust in Greater Manchester.

The £19m scheme created a 1,350-place school with general teaching facilities, science laboratories, a performance hall with connecting drama studio, a learning resource centre, dedicated sixth-form facilities and a four-court sports hall.

CJ Joinery's package centred on a large doorset installation alongside extensive finishing joinery throughout the new school.

Scope of Works

Scope of works

  • Supply and installation of 350+ doorsets
  • Fire doors and associated ironmongery
  • Installation records and certification evidence required for final sign-off
  • Approximately 500m of window boards
  • Approximately 4,000m of skirting board
  • Stair strings and associated finishing joinery
  • Coordination with BAM Construction on fire-door compliance requirements
The Challenge

The challenge

The main challenge was the scale of the doorset package combined with BAM Construction's requirement for complete fire-door compliance and sign-off.

With more than 350 doorsets, the quality-control process had to remain consistent across a high-volume installation while ensuring every fire door had the installation detail and supporting evidence BAM required.

Any missed detail, incomplete record or installation defect could delay sign-off, so the package required strong site controls and documentation alongside the physical installation work.

Our Approach

Our approach

CJ Joinery treated the doorset package as both an installation and a compliance-management exercise. The team worked closely with BAM Construction to understand exactly what was required for final fire-door sign-off and then built those requirements into the installation and quality-control process.

Particular attention was given to:

  • Correct doorset and ironmongery installation
  • Fire-door installation tolerances and detailing
  • Consistent quality checks across the full doorset package
  • Producing and maintaining the records BAM required
  • Promptly addressing any issues raised during inspection
  • Keeping the high-volume installation moving to programme

Bespoke reception desks

A separate £16k order for BAM Construction covered two bespoke desks: one for the main reception and one for the learning resource centre. The desks featured curves, a laminate finish and bespoke two-tone fabric seating.

Outcome

CJ Joinery successfully achieved the required sign-off across the full fire-door package.

The strongest part of CJ's performance was providing BAM Construction with exactly what it required to demonstrate compliance and close out the fire-door works successfully.

The project demonstrated CJ Joinery Contracts' ability to manage a large commercial doorset package where installation quality, certification and documentary evidence were equally important.
